More flexible fades in Movie Maker
Yesterday, I wrote about how add fade transitions to your clips using effects.
Unfortunately, Microsoft didn’t build in any way to vary the duration of the fade.
The “Fade In, From Black” effect takes about two-thirds of a second to fade all the way in.
What if you want a slower fade? What if you want a faster fade?
Here’s how to get the duration you want:
All you need is a single frame of black video (easy to create with a paint or photo touch-up tool).
First, drop the black frame in front of the clip you want to fade to or in back of the clip you want to fade from.
Next, grab the end of the black clip in the timeline and expand or contract it so it’s at least as long as you want the fade to be.
You can make it longer if you want a few seconds of black to precede the fade in, or follow the fade out.
Now click on “View video transitions” in the Movie Tasks panel; select the Fade transition and drop it onto the clip you want to fade into.
Finally, expand the Video section of the timeline, if necessary, by clicking on the +, then grab the Fade effect in the Transition portion of the timeline and drag the fade to the desired duration.
Viola! You have just created a fade customized to your needs.
